DISCIPLINES
SMPK Bumbong Lima is a purpose-built government secondary school for students with Special Education Needs (SEN), located on a 9.6-acre site in Bumbong Lima, Pulau Pinang. Designed to accommodate 160 students, the campus combines academic facilities, vocational workshops, hostels, warden units, and sports amenities within a fully barrier-free environment. The school forms part of a larger 20.5-acre educational compound, with the remaining land reserved for a conventional secondary school.
ARCHITECTURE
The architectural layout is organized around a central spine that connects the four-storey academic block to shared facilities that include workshops, library, prayer hall, canteen, and co-curricular spaces. This spine negotiates three cascading levels through a seamless system of ramps and elevators, enabling inclusive movement without segregation. Universal design principles are embedded throughout, from generous circulation clearances to protected courtyards that provide calm, enclosed outdoor spaces. A distinctive entrance façade inspired by Braille introduces both identity and environmental performance, advocating awareness of accessibility through architectural expression.
