DISCIPLINES
In the fast-growing suburb of Serpong, west of Jakarta, a new basketball stadium emerges as a community anchor and a contemporary sports venue. Positioned just behind a petrol station and adjacent to a major toll road, the project leverages its strategic accessibility to support a rising urban enthusiasm for basketball, particularly among Indonesia’s younger generation.
ARCHITECTURE
Conceived as the home of the client’s basketball club, the stadium accommodates two full-sized courts and seating for roughly 400 spectators. Its architecture responds directly to the constraints and opportunities of its site. The courts are elevated one storey above ground, a deliberate move to lift the primary activity away from roadside noise while creating an open, flexible plane beneath.
At ground level, parking and food-and-beverage stalls occupy a porous base that supports the flow of visitors on event days. Above, the courts are flanked along their southwestern edge by a linear bar of support spaces—changing rooms, administrative offices, a gym, and multi-purpose halls. This arrangement consolidates the stadium’s operational functions while forming a buffer against sound from the petrol station and toll road, allowing the playing environment to remain focused and acoustically comfortable.
The stadium’s roofscape integrates translucent panels that wash the courts with soft daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and enhancing visual comfort for players and spectators. Large openings and cross-ventilation patterns create a naturally ventilated interior, maintaining airflow and thermal comfort throughout the day.
The stadium delivers a functional yet uplifting space—one that supports community gatherings, and the energetic culture surrounding basketball in Indonesia’s expanding suburban landscape.
