Suma Apartment
An apartment with a large roof balcony overlooking Osaka Bay was stripped back and refurbished for a new architectural identity. The unit has a low ceiling and ubiquitous concrete beams, which pose a drawback. Responding to the challenge, a circle-and-square motif was installed on the living room ceiling to mitigate the oppressive feeling it gives. A noise-proof room for voice training is provided for one of the owners, who is a singer/ dancer/ actress. The dark wood color of large pieces of furniture, built-in cabinetry, and floor-to-ceiling outset sliding doors stand out against light colored mahogany flooring and very white shikkui (lime plaster) wallpaper.
