DISCIPLINES

Nestled along Jalan Semantan in Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, The Five @ KPD reimagines a 1970s low-rise government office enclave into a vibrant, community-focused commercial hub. Anchored by its proximity to the MRT station and a lively street plaza, the development transforms five former office blocks into a modern precinct that blends boutique retail, dining, and public spaces with the surrounding lush greenery.

ARCHITECTURE

Completed in 2022, the project exemplifies adaptive reuse, turning utilitarian structures into a dynamic urban destination that celebrates openness, permeability, and human-scale interaction. The design strategy employed surgical, minimal interventions to reshape the existing low-rise blocks while staying within a streamlined budget.

A double-storey volumetric steel-and-glass box marks the new frontage, with curtain-wall elements creating transparency and visual connectivity between the plaza and interior retail. A generous public esplanade replaces concrete fences, complemented by terraces, canopies, and alfresco dining spaces. The façade is refined and pared back, with concrete fins and ledges selectively removed, enhancing daylight penetration and ensuring the new activities are legible from the exterior. Sculptural “umbrella” decks punctuate the plaza, functioning as both public art and functional shading, while the simplified roofline and clean parapets give the ensemble a contemporary, refreshed presence.

A carved atrium through the lower floors exposes the original structural frames, establishing intuitive wayfinding and fostering vertical connectivity. The double-height atrium encourages visual and physical permeability between floors, while terraces and canopies introduce light and outdoor experiences.

The interiors maintain a neutral, minimalist palette that emphasizes materiality and spatial clarity. Terrazzo floors, exposed concrete slabs, and visible service elements form a restrained backdrop for a curated mix of 15 boutique tenants. Color is reserved for wayfinding and tenant fit-outs, allowing each outlet’s identity to animate the atrium and circulation spaces. The combination of simple finishes, open circulation, and carefully choreographed sightlines transforms the formerly rigid office blocks into a lively, human-centric environment that encourages interaction, leisure, and community engagement.
