DISCIPLINES

QBig is a 17-hectare retail park located in BSD City, a 6,000-hectare masterplanned township developed by Sinarmas Land. Positioned an hour from central Jakarta, the project reimagines large-format retail as an integrated public destination. Framed by commercial programmes and anchored by a central park, QBig introduces a new typology for community-oriented retail in Indonesia.

ARCHITECTURE

The development is composed of five building blocks arranged around a landscaped community park. Each block accommodates large-format tenants—including a hypermarket, building materials and household retailers, a furniture store, and recreational uses—with supporting dining and amenity facilities.

Architecturally, the buildings adopt wide-span, column-free structures inspired by warehouse and hangar typologies, enabling flexible interior layouts. Facades combine corrugated metal, composite panels, and full-height glazing, establishing clear retail visibility while maintaining a robust material expression. A continuous red canopy forms the project’s most distinctive design element. This geometric structure links the buildings, offering shaded pedestrian routes, seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor environments, and a variety of entrance conditions.

The roof’s complex geometry demanded advanced computational design and modeling to ensure effective tropical rainwater performance. Planar roof surfaces were calibrated to accommodate the canopy’s irregular footprint while integrating precisely with adjacent building envelopes. Select areas incorporate ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) cushions, introducing daylight and enhancing the comfort of semi-outdoor spaces.

As Indonesia’s first retail park of its scale and concept, QBig has become a popular destination for families and young visitors, celebrated for its leisure-driven environment and innovative use of steel. The project was nominated for the Colorbond Award 2018, affirming its contribution to contemporary retail architecture.
