VERITAS Consulting’s Quantity Surveying team supported the client through the early stages of the project by preparing preliminary construction cost estimates during feasibility, concept, and schematic design. These estimates provide an early-order cost indication based on limited design information, benchmark data, and elemental cost analysis. This data is then used to determine the financial viability and financing arrangements of the proposed development, and establish an initial project budget.
Beyond budgeting, the estimates enable comparison of alternative design schemes, construction methods, and material specifications. At the same time, it also sets a cost control benchmark during subsequent design development, ensuring that the evolving design remains aligned with the approved budget and the client’s financial objectives.
The team assisted in the evaluation of two possible options for upgrading the existing passenger handling capacity of Kuching International Airport:
- To upgrade the existing main Passenger Terminal Building
- To maintain the existing Passenger Terminal Building with its current capacity of 5 mppa and construct a new LCCT of 10 mppa
Currently, Kuching International Airport has a capacity of 5 mppa (million passengers per annum) which would not be sufficient to facilitate AirAsia’s growth. A dedicated LCCT that facilitates low-cost carrier operations with low airport charges will help further accelerate tourism growth in the region.
