Jingumae sauna was built in what was once a small basement of an office building in downtown Tokyo. One of the challenges faced during the project came from the hand-drawn in blurry prints, necessitating new measurements for concrete structural elements during demolition. With a limited budget and tight budget, the design concept was quickly determined to be “black and white”, emphasizing the contrast of heavenly sauna experience and the rigor of everyday life. Black stoneware tiles for the walls and floor of the bath give a calming ambience, with wood accents and low yellow light adding warmth to the space. The sauna rooms, on the other hand, follow the traditional all-wood finishes for a proper sauna.
